In its twentieth year I was truly stoked to be able to grab a ticket to the opening night.

Getting introduced to the festival curators and gaining insights to their thoughts and highlights of the programme was an added bonus and helped set the scene to understand the cultural impact this festival has had,  or just in Berlin, but across the world.

The opening night included a festival premier of the very fun and sometimes surreal b-road movie FUCKTOYS, introduced by its writer and star Annapurna Sriram.

Housed in a relatively small but intimate kino I had the pleasure of  sitting through one of the most enjoyable and deliciously spicy evenings of my trip as the audience and I worked our way through a diverse catalogue of short  BDSM themed movies made by creators from across the globe.

Highlights for me were Soirée By: Rachel Britton which involved a muppet/Sesame Street crossover which included a drug fuelled threesome with Miss Piggy, a piss soaked Kermit and a bound Big Bird.

Another stand out for me was Breakfast Time By: Peter Cage in which a pup talked through his homosexual awakening whilst laying on the floor, wiggling his plugged tail and eating banana from his dog bowl which up until recently had been sitting in his arse.

Finally and rounding off the evenings program was the wonderous musical The House, A BDSM Musical

By: Jay Lincal Incredibly fun and not only the highlight of the evening but alongside my top five moments of my whole trip.

Spending the evening surrounded by openly kinky and in some cases, rubberised, people is such an empowering and validating experience. And that’s one of the key things about Berlin; the openness and acceptance of sexuality and personal expression  was everything I had hoped for.
